The running game got a boost as former Chicago Bear Andy
Livingston joined the New Orleans Saints and racked up 761 yards
on 181 carries. Tony Baker came off the taxi squad and added 642
more (on 134 carries). Danny Abramowicz set a Saints team record
73 catches (a record that stood in the Saints books until 1978,
when Tony Galbreath broke it) and 1015 yards. Billy Kilmer ranked 8th in the league
in passing. His stats were 360 attempts-193 completions-2532
yards-20 tds and 17 interceptions.
In one of sports big moments, in the victory against St.Louis,
Kilmer and Jim Hart combined for a total of 12 touchdown passes.
Kilmer hit 6 of them and had 345 yards passing.
With the season ending 27-24 victory over Pittsburgh, the New Orleans Saints actually set an
NFL record for an Expansion team winning record after 3 years with a
total combined record of 12-29-1. Danny Abramociwz had 8 catches in the game to give him the
NFL reception lead.
Hall of Fame Defensive legend Doug Atkins retired after a 17 year career. Opposing quarterbacks
could now breath a little easier. Atkins made the
Pro-Bowl along with Tom Dempsey, Tony Baker, Andy Livingston,
Jake Kupp and the entire New Orleans Saints Coaching
staff.
