1979 New Orleans Saints vs Oakland Raiders – Monday Night Football Highlights
For us long-time New Orleans Saints fans that have been around for awhile, the 1979 Monday Night game against Oakland will always be painful matter. The 1979 Saints season was the most memorable ones to date for Who Dat fans. The offense featured Archie Manning at quarterback along with high-profile targets Wes Chandler and Henry Childs along with a dynamic tandem in the offensive back field in Chuck Muncie and Tony Galbreath. The defense, while not great, for the first time it seemed was at least respectable. The 8 wins had been the most ever by a NO Saints squad and up until the end of the regular season, the Saints were actually engaged in a possible playoff spot.
But one permanent blemish that will forever stain the memories of that season is the infamous Monday Night Football Game against The Snake Kenny Stabler and the powerhouse Oakland Raiders. Head coach John Madden had assembled one of the most successful football teams of the 70s and had been the NFL champions the year before with a Super Bowl victory over the Minnesota Vikings. This Monday Night, Stabler proved his nickname.
As a 13-year old die-hard Saints fan, I remember this as probably the most heart breaking ever in my mind. After years of losing and numerous futile attempts at prime time victories, my beloved New Orleans Saints had built up a 21-point lead in the second half over one of the most feared teams in professional football. In utter horror I watched Kenny Stabler and company mount one of greatest comeback victories on Monday Night Football and win in the last two minutes of the game.
This short video is by far one of the best highlight reels of that game I have ever seen. It captures all the biggest plays and moments of that fateful day in New Orleans Saints History. Many thanks to Martin Paris for the awesome upload.
