Expectations for the 2001 NFL season were high...... probably higher than any season before. Coming off the first ever Saints playoff victory the year before, fans couldn't wait for kickoff! A new exciting young quarterback in Aaron Brooks teamed with fan favorite receiver Joe Horn promised to provide an offensive show Saints fans hadn't seen in awhile. Coupled with a talented defense led by the likes of Sammy Knight, La' Roi Glover and Darren Howard, this team showed so much potential that some NFL experts were predicting Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, it was just the opposite. Despite an 18 point comeback against the St. Louis Rams and a revenge-fueled domination of the Minnesota Vikings, this season would be a year marked by mistakes and inconsistencies. Instead of building on the success of 2000, 2001 will always be remembered for the The 4-game meltdown that ended the year.
Just in case you haven't heard, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime to become the NFC Champions and advance to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.
This is just a little bit of that night and how I feel about it.
****Part 1****
With the 2009 NFL season now in the books, the New Orleans Saints regular
season statistics are final and we actually have some new players to add
to the NoSaintsHistory.com All-Time Leaders list.
Morten Andersen. In my opinion, if there was ever a kicker that deserved a spot in the Hall of Fame, it was him. Drafted by Bum Phillips in 1982, this Danish born kicker would become the most prolific kicker to ever wear the Black and Gold.
Now that he has officially retired from the NFL, I've updated his bio page and done a little re-designing.
Dick Nolan entered his second year as Head Coach. His first season
had brought New Orleans their best season yet and 1979 looked to be even
more promising.
While 1979 was the first season where the Saints didn't have a losing record, it was arguably the first "Almost-Season" of New Orleans Saints history.
Despite Archie Manning's All-Pro Season and Chuck Muncie's 1,000+ rushing performance, Saints Fans will never get over the infamous Monday Night Game against Oakland in the Super Dome where Kenny Stabler and crew posted a 28 point second half rally.
The 1988 NFL was a season of mixed feelings for the Saints
For the first time in franchise history the Saints posted back-to-back winning
seasons. Some of the greatest moments in Saints History to date were experienced
in the 1988 campaign. Making the cover of Sports Illustrated, a 42-0
blowout of John Elway and the Denver Broncos, 5 sacks against Detroit, a last-second
Morten Andersen field goal against Dallas on Monday night.
A 10-6 record yet the Saints failed to make the playoffs.
Rickey Jackson, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills and Vaughn Johnson. The Dome Patrol.
Just the very mention of the name will bring fond memories to any Saints fan.
The 80s and early 90s were an unprecedented time for the New Orleans Saints
and their supporters. Those seasons featured one of the top ranked defenses
of all time and at the fore-front of that defense was arguably one of the best
line backing corps in the history of the NFL. All 4 linebackers were named to
the Pro-Bowl in 1992.
