A spirited player and ferocious tackler I put Tommy Myers in the same category I put other New Orleans Saints greats like Derland Moore and Joe Federspiel in, standout defensive players that played on bad defensive teams. Very bad teams.
A 3rd round pick from Syracuse in 1972, the 5 foot 11 Tommy Myers played his entire 10 year career in New Orleans as was the career interception leader until the Dome Patrol entered the NFL and Dave Waymer claimed that honor. His best seasons as Saint came, consequently, in 1978 and 1979 – probably the best seasons the Saints had ever had up to that time. In 1978 he had 6 interceptions with a 97-yard interception return for a TD against Minnesota. Tommy did a little better in 1979 making his only Pro Bowl with 7 interceptions and another touchdown. This time it was a 52 yard pick-six against Detroit. He is also credited with 5 fumble recoveries in his career and 2 of those were returned for touchdowns.
