1987 New Orleans Saints Are In The Playoffs

The New Orleans Saints where heading to the NFL playoffs for the first time ever after the 44-34 December 6 victory over the Tampa Bay Bucs in 1987. It was some pretty fantastical stuff for Saints fans and the sports world celebrated

HBO’s Inside the NFL featured the Saints that week on it’s scheduled telecast by broadcasting from the French Quarter with hosts Nick Buoniconti and Len Dawson. And while the show included news from around the NFL, the main focus centered around the 9-3 playoff bound New Orleans Saints.

Highlights from win over Tampa Bay are covered as well as exclusive talks with quarterback Bobby Hebert, kicker Morten Andersen, linebacker Sam Mills and free safety Dave Waymer. For the featured cover story, Drew Pearson goes spec fishing with Rueben Mayes, Hoby Brenner and former Saint Hokie Gajan.

Also included is an interview with the late New Orleans sports announcer Buddy Dilberto, the original Bag Head. Diliberto discusses the origin of paper bags and the “A’ints”.

One other segment of interest to Louisiana sports fans is a “Where Are They Now” special on former LSU great and NFL All-Pro safety Tommy Casanova who played 6 seasons for teh Cincinnati Bengals.

Produced by NFL Films and the late-great Ed Sabol and brought to you by galaxies352.

I've been following the Saints since a kid in the 70s watching the likes of Archie Manning and Tommy Myers.
