An Unsung Hero of Saints – Free Safety Tom Myers
One of the most unheralded member of the WhoDat Nation’s past. Free Safety Tommy Myers has been named to the New Orleans Saints 50th Anniversary Defensive Team. A third round draft pick from Syracuse in 1972 NFL draft Tommy Myers played 10 seasons for the Saints. He also managed 2 seasons in the upstart USFL before retiring. Often characterized by his ferocious and reckless play he was considered one of the very few defensive standouts that New Orleans had during those abysmal years of the early and mid 70s. When the team finally began to rack some a few victories in the late 70s Tommy was a major contributor to the team’s success and was named to the 1979 Pro Bowl. He set a team record in 1978 with a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Vikings.
His 36 picks is still #2 on the Saints All-Time Career Interception Leaders List.
